The MBBR-Box – Wastewater Treatment Plant with Moving Bed Technology
The MBBR-Box is a compact wastewater treatment system designed for new construction projects, featuring modern Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology. The system combines reliable biological wastewater treatment with a robust, installation-friendly design.
The tank is constructed from polyethylene (PE) and features an integrally molded internal partition, which ensures exceptional structural stability. Thanks to its narrow, rectangular shape, the system can be installed without difficulty, even in confined spaces.
The unit is delivered pre-assembled and ready for immediate connection. All technical components are pre-configured, requiring only the connection of the air supply lines to the external control column. This standard external column houses the control unit, air distributor, and compressor, providing convenient and organized access to the system’s technical equipment.
The MBBR Box in Detail
The biofilm process utilized in MBBR technology ensures reliable and stable treatment performance. The system operates without any electrically driven or rotating components submerged in the wastewater, making it exceptionally robust and low-maintenance. Furthermore, the unit is ideally suited to handle temporary situations of both overload and underload.
As a standard feature, the MBBR Box meets Effluent Class C requirements; an optional configuration meeting Effluent Class D is also available.
The PE tank is groundwater-stable up to 1.12 meters above the tank base, allowing for installation even in environments with elevated groundwater levels. Additionally, the system is rated for vehicular traffic (passenger cars) up to 3.5 tons.
- The MBBR-Box Complete System:
- PE Container – Monolithic PE container, rotationally molded in a single piece with an integrated partition wall; features an extremely space-saving design.
- Ease of Use – Delivered to the construction site pre-assembled and ready for connection. Installation and operation are very simple and straightforward.
- High Cleaning Performance – Optimal distribution of microorganisms within the treatment stage thanks to free-floating carrier material.
- No Electrical Units: Wear-free, compressed-air-driven lifters within the system.
- Low maintenance and repair costs – one-time maintenance possible via telemetry.
- Drainage Class C as Standard; Drainage Class D optionally available.
- Scope of delivery:
- PE Tank with Pre-assembled MBBR Technology
- PE-Outdoor Column with control unit, air distributor with solenoid valve for sludge recirculation, and compressor.
- Protection against the washing away of growth substrates
- Air supply lines (10 m length) for connection to the outdoor column
How MBBR Wastewater Treatment Works

- Preliminary Clarification
- Wastewater from the house flows by gravity into the primary treatment stage. Sludge and coarse solids settle out and are stored here. The wastewater then flows into the biological treatment stage.
- Biology
- This is where the carrier material is located, on which the microorganisms settle. They form the biofilm that purifies the wastewater.
- The aeration ensures the necessary supply of oxygen to the biofilm.
- Slotted pipes in the overflows and a cover on the chamber reliably prevent the carrier material from being washed away.
- Secondary Clarification
- Solids discharged from the biological treatment stage settle to the bottom here. An airlift pump conveys the sludge to the secondary clarifier.

FAQ
MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) is a biological treatment process. Microorganisms grow on moving carrier media and degrade pollutants from the wastewater.
Yes. The MBBR Box is delivered pre-assembled and ready for connection. For commissioning, the air supply lines simply need to be connected to the external column.
By default, the system meets discharge class C. Optionally, it can also be configured for discharge class D.
The MBBR Box is drivable by passenger cars up to 3.5 tons and can therefore be installed beneath trafficable surfaces, such as driveways or courtyards.
Yes. The narrow rectangular shape allows for installation even in confined spaces. Furthermore, the tank is groundwater-stable.
Yes. Air supply lines 10 meters in length are included in the scope of delivery.
